Three persons, including a couple, were killed in two separate instances of wall collapse in different parts of the city on Friday, because of overnight rain.
A 60-year-old construction labourer and his wife were killed when a section of the wall of their house at Rajanukunte collapsed on them while they were sleeping.
Siddappa and his wife Sanjeevamma (55) were natives of Obalapura of Tumkur district.
The couple had come to Rajanukunte to work in a vineyard and was living in a small rented 70-year-old house for the past five years.
The incident came to light when Marappa, who works with the couple, came to wake them up to go to work. When there was no response, Marappa forced open the front door to find the couple buried under debris. He rushed them to hospital where the doctors declared them brought dead.
According to the police, the wall collapsed because of heavy overnight rain. A narrow lane behind the house was being used as a dumping yard by the neighbouring houses. Water stagnated at the back and weakened the walls, which caved in on Thursday night, the police said.
They evacuated residents of the neighbouring houses. “We have offered them temporary accommodation at the police station,” a police official said.
In Rajarajeshwarinagar
In a similar incident, a 43-year-old woman was killed after a wall of her house in Rajarajeshwarinagar collapsed on Friday.
She was identified as Saraswathi, who was living at Bangarappanagar with her husband, Neela Gowda, an office attendant, and two children.
Saraswathi had been ill for the past two days. On Friday morning, Neela Gowda noticed a part of the wall had collapsed at around 6.30 a.m. and he cleared the debris. After he left for work, another part of the wall collapsed on Saraswathi, who was sleeping.
Her daughter-in-law Rajeshwari, who was living nearby, rushed her to a hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead.
