A 35-year-old homemaker Prachi Debashish was allegedly murdered by her husband’s friend over a financial dispute at her home in Domlur on Monday afternoon. Her husband was at work when the incident occurred.

The suspect, Basudev Jena, was caught by passers-by while trying to flee from the scene of the crime. He was handed over to the police.

Prachi married Debashish Das, a senior manager with an IT company, eight months ago. During questioning, police learnt Basudev had loans of Rs. 1 crore. N. Satish Kumar, DCP (East), said, “Basudev demanded Rs. 25,000 from Prachi. When she refused, he threatened her at knife point. He panicked when she screamed and slit her throat.”

The landlady Saraswathi helped nab the suspect. “I heard screams for help and rushed to the second floor where I encountered Basudev, his clothes stained with blood, on the staircase. I asked him what had happened, but he ran away. That’s when I realised something was wrong and called out for help,” she recounted. A passer-by caught Basudev and handed him over to the police.

Prachi was found lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen with her throat slit. There was no sign of forced entry into the house. Debashish lodged a complaint at the Ulsoor police station.

Basudev had lived with Debashish in the same house 12 years ago, when they were bachelors.
