In a show of solidarity for the group of African students who were attacked by a mob, around 200 students from several different African countries stood in silent protest at Town Hall on Saturday morning.
The silent gathering assembled on the Town Hall steps around 9 a.m. and stood for two hours. “We had a meeting with the Government officials on Friday night. They are working to punish the guilty. It is good to see them acting on the matter,” said Joseph, a student studying in South Bengaluru.
Others praised police officers in the eastern parts of the city for their outreach programmes which made it easier for foreign students to approach them during times of need. “This incident has happened in a place out of the city. In our area, we have access to the police when needed. They help us out,” said James, a student staying in Banaswadi. However, he said that policemen across stations must be asked to pay more attention to the safety of foreigners.
The gathering dispersed by 11:30 a.m.. Most of the students had caught buses to get to the venue. Another protest is being organized in the evening by students.
