Taking cognisance of diseases caused due to mosquito bites in the city, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday requested the State government and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to take swift measures, particularly fogging, to quell mosquito menace.
A Division Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice B.V. Nagarathna, took suo motu cognisance about the instances of malaria, dengue and chikungunya, while also pointing out that two High Court employees were suffering from chikungunya.
Justice Mukherjee said that one cannot imagine the suffering of chikungunya patients due to pain. He said, “Mosquito menace has to be tackled effectively by the BBMP and the State government with proper coordination.”
“Kindly rise to the occasion,” Justice Mukherjee told the government counsel, requesting him to ask authorities to check mosquito menace by carrying out extensive fogging across the city. “We are not passing any order hoping that you [government] will act quickly…” the Bench said.
Principal government Advocate R. Devdas assured the Bench that he would apprise the court’s concern to the Urban Development Department officials while assuring the Bench that he would inform them about the action initiated.
Justice Mukherjee took cognisance of the issue after the Bench heard a PIL petition related to the garbage processing unit being set up on a civic amenity site at Banashankari 6th Stage.
