Stir today for release of anti-quarrying activists

August 24, 2010 01:16 pm | Updated 01:16 pm IST - BANGALORE:

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will hold demonstrations in all district and taluk headquarters of the State on Tuesday to pressure the Government to release activists of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) arrested by the police in Magadi, Ramanagaram district.

The KPRS activists, who were opposing illegal quarrying activities at Betta Thimmappa Hill, were arrested by the police on Saturday.

CPI(M) Bangalore District Secretary Prakash told The Hindu that activists of KPRS, Janawadi Mahila Sangha, DYFI, SFI, CITU and other progressive organisations will participate in the protests.

The demonstration comes close on the heels of a similar protest by KPRS activists in front of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa's residence in Bangalore on Sunday demanding the release of their leaders.
