Karnataka stands sixth in the Chennai region which consists of six States and four union territories in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 10 examinations that was announced here on Sunday.
Topping the list in the Chennai region are Goa and Lakshadweep which have secured 100 per cent passes.
The other three States that have secured better pass percentage than Karnataka’s 99.90 are Kerala (99.96 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (99.96 per cent) and Tamil Nadu (99.93 per cent).
The percentages of other States and Union Territories are Maharashtra (99.89), Pondicherry (99.87), Daman and Diu (99.60) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands (98.39 ).
The CBSE board has given students an option to either take a board-based exam or a school-based exam. In Karnataka, 23,115 of the 23,136 who appeared have cleared the test leaving only 21 students under the Category of Eligible for Improvement of Performance (EIOP).
Even in the Chennai region only 213 students have been listed under the EIOP category.
Speaking about the overall performance of the Chennai region, T. Sudharasan Rao, Regional Officer, CBSE, Chennai Region, said: “There has been a steep reduction in the number of students scoring E1 and E2 grades. Last year, there were 423 students who got E1 or E2 grades. But this year although the number of candidates has increased by 23,000, only 213 students in the Chennai Region have not passed.”
According to the CBSE system, a student’s performance is given in the form of grades — A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D, E1 and E2. Students who have secured grades between A1 and D are qualified for admission to higher classes. As per the board rules, students who have obtained grades E1 and E2 are eligible for improvement of performance, which means that they can appear for improvement of their performance as per board rules.
Students are given an overall score known as the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Many schools in the city have several students who have secured a full 10 CGPA . An overjoyed principal of NPS Kormangala, Lakshmi Rao said that the school had secured 100 per cent distinction and 21 students had secured a CGPA of 10.
Meanwhile, in Kendriya Vidyalaya, DRDO, which secured 100 per cent passes, 46 students, of the 188, have secured a 10 CGPA.
