S.S. Arakeri, ex-MLA, gets Ambedkar Award

Former MLA S.S. Arakeri has been selected for the prestigious Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Award, instituted by the State government.

A committee, headed by writer S. Siddalingaiah selected Mr. Arakeri for the award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh and 20 gm of gold.

Mr. Arakeri retired as lecturer of the Law department, Bangalore University. Born on June 12, 1934, at Arakeri in Vijayapura district, Mr. Arakeri served in the Republic Party of India. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1967 and 1978.

Minister for Social Welfare H. Anjaneya said Mr. Arakeri was instrumental in installing the Dr. Ambedkar statue in front of the Vidhana Soudha and naming the road passing in front of the Vidhana Soudha as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Road. He played a vital role in constructing the Dr. Ambedkar Bhavan in the city, and Ambedkar Engineering and Medical College.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will present the award at the banquet hall of the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday.
