While the BBMP has successfully stopped dumping the city’s waste in the landfills in Mandur, it is yet to achieve significant progress in setting up new processing units.
According to senior officials, the BBMP has achieved some 30 per cent progress in setting up units in Subbarayanapalya, Kannahalli, Lingadeeranahalli, Seegehalli, Doddabidarakallu and Chikkanagamangala. The total processing capacity of these units will be around 2,000 tonnes.
M.R. Venkatesh, BBMP’s chief engineer, told The Hindu that the initial work is in the critical stage. “Once that is completed, the remaining work — erection of sheds and installation of equipment — can be completed in a short span of time. The new units are likely to be commissioned in another two months’ time,” he said.
The BBMP has decentralised the monitoring of the existing and new processing units to the respective zones. The zonal officials concerned will be held responsible for any issues that may arise in these units.
Senior officials said that the main reason for the decentralisation was the shortage of engineers in the head office. “We were dependant on consultants. Now that zonal officials have been vested with the responsibility, there will better efficiency,” an official said.
