A 53-year-old security guard was brutally murdered by a miscreant during an attempted robbery at the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) centre of a nationalised bank on Uttarahalli Main Road here early on Thursday. However, swift action by the city police led to cracking the murder within two hours of the crime.

The victim has been identified as M. Chandrappa of Uttarahalli, a guard working with a private security agency. He was found with his throat slit near the ATM of Corporation Bank, situated next to the bank premises, at Uttarahalli Circle in Subrahmanyapura Police Station limits.

“We have cracked the case and have arrested a person who allegedly committed the crime,” Sonia Narang, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Division), told The Hindu .

The accused has been identified as Simon Benedict alias Karim Sayi alias Moosa Benedict Titus (20). Simon, a native of Chandrabala Srivastav Magada Colony of Patna, in Bihar, allegedly attempted to take cash from the ATM. Mr. Chandrappa while trying to foil the robbery, was stabbed with a knife, said an officer familiar with the investigation. “We have collected several clues, including samples of blood stains, fingerprints and footprints from the scene of murder. The accused had arrived with cutting tools to open the ATM machine,” he said.

After slitting the throat of the victim, Simon attempted to extract cash from the ATM. However, he escaped as soon as he saw a person coming towards him.

Police alerted

Later, local residents alerted the police. Simon's images were captured on the CCTV cameras installed at the ATM.

All South Division police teams were mobilised to crack the case. The police, based on the CCTV footage, saw the accused near Uttarahalli on a moped and arrested him.

Simon confessed to the crime during interrogation, the officer added.

Police have seized a knife, hammer, a crowbar, cutting tools and other material from Simon.

Chandrappa's son, Ganesh, has filed a case of murder against the accused.
