Members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) held a protest in front of the Upparpet police station after one of their members was attacked by a group of armed men while he was on his way to attend a shakha on Saturday morning.

Ramesh Vaishnav (38), who sustained injuries, was admitted to Victoria Hospital while the other members staged a protest demanding the arrest of the attackers.

The Cottonpet police, with whom the complaint has been lodged, were yet to identify the attackers. The protestors claimed that they have identified a few people belonging to a particular community and informed the police.

According to the RSS members, the attack was the fallout of an argument with them over a trivial issue at the ground where the shakha was held on Friday. The protestors claimed that the shakha was going on as usual in the ground where some of these men were playing cricket. Since it was disturbing the meeting, Ramesh requested them to move a little away and play. Heated arguments ensued when some of them threatened Ramesh with dire consequences.

The RSS shakha in Majestic has been operational for more than 60 years and Ramesh has been a member for nearly two decades. “It was at about 6 a.m. and he was on his way to the meeting when he was attacked with iron rods,” a police officer said referring to the complaint.
