Upset over nearly 60 trees being put on the chopping board to make way for a signal-free corridor on Old Airport Road, residents of surrounding areas are planning to protest by forming a human chain on Sunday morning.
As many as 37 trees have already been cut for the project.
Two weeks back, around 37 trees were cut near ISRO junction and another 45 to 60 near HAL bus stop have been marked.
“All these trees are several decades old. We are expecting around 300 to 350 persons to be part of the protest,” said Amarnath John, who is part of the team organising the protest.
He added that while officials had earlier said 52 trees would be cut in all, (18 at ISRO junction, 16 on HAL junction and 18 at Kundalahalli junction), the actual numbers of trees cut was much higher.
“Already 37 trees were cut on ISRO juntion and more than 60 have been marked near HAL junction for cutting,” said Mr. John.
An online petition to protect the trees received more than 4,000 signatures until Saturday.
Several Residents Welfare Associations in the area, including Vinayakanagar RWA, KR Garden RWA, CV Raman Nagar RWA, and LB Shastri Nagar RWA are supporting the protest. Residents say the project which had been delayed for three years was suddenly restarted without public consultation.
