The vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party SC/ST Yuva Morcha’s Anekal taluk unit was hacked to death by a group of men on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday.

The deceased, Harish, 40, was returning home after meeting his friends at a bar and restaurant when the assailants intercepted his motorcycle, threw chilli powder on his face and hacked him to death near Ramasagara Gate. Harish, who was appointed vice-president of the unit a week ago, is the brother-in-law of Chandapura Town Municipal Council president Venugopal.

Initial investigations revealed that Harish had an heated argument with his relative Raju over a fishing contract. Raju and his siblings were fishing in a pond in Anekal and Harish had reprimanded them by saying that they were illegally fishing, the police said.

Later, Harish is said to have gone to Raju’s house at Halali village and allegedly assaulted him and his parents over the issue, after which he went to meet his friends in the bar and restaurant, the police said.

The police suspected that an enraged Raju got Harish killed with the help of his relatives. The Suryanagar police have taken up a case and are on the lookout for Raju and others.

Soon after the incident, party workers attacked Raju’s house.

BJP State president B.S. Yeddyurappa condemned the murder by tweeting “... From IAS officer to political activists no one seems safe under Congress rule.”

This is the second such incident this year. On March 14, a BJP member of the Bommasandra Town Municipal Council was hacked to death a similar manner.
