A city-based advocate has been accused of attempting to rape a 41-year-old beautician when she sought his legal help to apply for a passport for her son.

The High Grounds police reportedly received a complaint on Friday but are yet to file an FIR. The victim, a resident of R.T. Nagar, had visited the advocate’s office on Cunningham Road, the police said.

On Friday, the accused allegedly called the victim to his office, locked the door from inside and attempted to rape her. She said that she ran out and called her relatives, who accompanied her to the jurisdictional High Grounds police station to file a complaint.

The police heard her and asked her to file a written complaint. After she did so, the police allegedly asked her to write another one as there were many corrections in the copy. She did so and then said that she was asked to come the next day owing to a technical problem in the printer at the station.

When she came on Saturday to get a copy of the FIR, the police allegedly said that they had to obtain permission from the senior police officers to register the case.

“I tried to reason with them stating that it was a serious case and needs immediate attention, but the police tried to discourage me stating that I had to accompany them to the crime scene and subjected me to questioning,” the victim said.

She then approached the womens’ helpline and the State Womens’ Commission seeking help.

High Grounds Police Inspector Narasimhamurthy refused to comment when The Hindu contacted him.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sandeep Patil said that he would probe into this incident and take necessary action.
