Protest against move to dilute panel's powers

People belonging to various Backward Class organisations gathered in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Ananda Rao Circle here on Tuesday to protest against the reported clipping of the powers of the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes.

Members of the Karnataka State Backward Caste Federation, Samata Sainika Dal, Karnataka Pradesh Kurubara Sangha and Dr. Rammanohar Lohia Forum joined former Ministers H.M. Revanna and B.T. Lalitha Naik to protest against the BJP Government's decision.

The State Government had, in its notification on April 3, reduced the rank of the commission's chairman from that of High Court judge toMinister, contrary to the provisions of the amendedKarnataka State Commission for Backward Classes Act 1995.
