Police seeking suspension of auto drivers’ licences

December 24, 2014 12:55 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:57 pm IST - Bengaluru:

A day after the intensive drive against autorickshaw drivers on Monday, the traffic police are in the process of writing to the Transport Department recommending suspension of their licences.

In Upparpet division, the police have written to the Regional Transport Office regarding suspension of 22 drivers’ licences.

As many as 5,172 autorickshaws had been booked on Monday during the special police drive carried out in light of complaints by passengers.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B Dayananda said that all the 5,000-odd licences would be submitted to the Transport Department.

B V Raghavendra, Vice-President of the Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union, said, “We do not have any problems with the drive. However, police operating in plainclothes is wrong. Also, those auto drivers who have been booked must be given an opportunity to contest the charge in court, and not just be told to pay the penalty. We cannot afford to pay thousands of rupees.”
