Police responsible for violence during protest: Gowda

April 21, 2016 07:43 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:16 pm IST - BENGALURU:

Holding the police responsible for the violence during Tuesday’s protest by garment factory workers against the Centre’s amendment to the employees’ provident fund scheme, the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda said had prohibitory orders been imposed on Monday, immediately after workers took to the streets, the violence would not have erupted.

Atrocities

“I am disturbed by the police atrocities against workers, especially against women and mediapersons,” he said.

Dubbing the incidents in and around Bengaluru as “intelligence failure”, Mr. Gowda said the Home Ministry completely failed in assessing the situation and maintaining law and order.

‘Centre anti-labour’

When asked about Labour Ministry issuing an administrative order without taking up the issue with the Central Board of Trustees EPF, he said the NDA government was “anti-labour” and the recent amendment testifies to that. “The government did not understand the implications of the order on EPF,” he said.
