Personal Digital Assistants that allow the traffic police to collect fines from offenders immediately with a swipe of a card have helped boost the department’s coffers. Within 15 days, the traffic police have been able to collect a little over ₹45 lakh from violators.

The old Blackberries that the police used to use were eased out to make way for the GPS devices that facilitate cashless transactions.

“Now, traffic offenders have no excuse to evade fines. The system is faster, transparent and allows no room for any irregularities,” said Additional Commissioner of Police R Hitendra.

The device comes equipped with a camera that can record events for digital evidence, a recorder and a printer to generate receipt or register cases.

“It has helped us to resolve violation cases faster as earlier, the traffic police concerned would have to guard the seized vehicles,” said a senior police officer.

In the last 15 days the police have booked 38,610 cases using these devices and collected ₹45,15,900 in cash.
