The overnight rain on Thursday resulted in long power outages being reported from areas such as R.R. Nagar, HSR Layout, New Thippasandra, Banashankari, Jakkur, and parts of the central business district well into Friday afternoon.

According to the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), a total of 6,258 complaints were received from across the city, with the maximum complaints received from the south zone (2,336), followed by east (1,576), west (1,276), and north (1,070).

Zahid Jawali, a resident of HSR Layout, said the area had been dealing with low voltage issues for the past few days. “On Friday, there was a lot of power fluctuation and power came and went every few hours.” New Thippasandra and neighbouring areas also had similar complaints.

In Richmond Town, there was no power for a couple of hours early in the morning. “Our WhatsApp group was buzzing with messages from residents complaining about power outages in the morning,” said Nithya Reddy, member of Richmond Town and Langford Town Residents’ Association.

Resident of R.R. Nagar and Banashankari also faced power cuts through the night. “We had no power for five hours on Friday morning,” said Srinath Prabhu, a resident, and added that the issue was addressed by afternoon.

Uday Kumar, Chief Engineer, Bescom, said, “There was no load shedding on Friday and the power outage was owing to the sudden rain. The moisture on the cable could have led to the power cuts. All complaints have been resolved.”

City to remain cloudy

The city recorded 9 mm of rainfall on Friday. No damages were reported from any BBMP zone. According to India Meteorological Department, the city will be under general cloud cover and a few spells of rains are expected for the next two days. Mist is likely in some areas early morning.

“The cyclonic effect over the Lakshadweep Island is causing rain in south-interior Karnataka. However, the intensity of the rain will decrease in the next few days,” said an IMD official.
