Increased vehicular traffic and an increase in traffic violations has led to the city seeing a major accident almost every one and a half hours.
The analysis of traffic accidents in the city by the Bengaluru City Traffic Police – which has published its ‘Road accidents in Bangalore’ report for the second year running – notes that there have been days when the number of vehicular accidents have gone up to 25, or one nearly every hour.
Black spots
The report identifies 10 black spots in the city, where accidents have become eerily common. Hosur Road (Madiwala stretch to Electronic City) tops the list with over 252 accidents recorded last year, which resulted in 46 fatalities. The 62-km-long Outer Ring Road saw 208 accidents, resulting in 48 deaths.
Accidents peaked on weekends, with Saturdays recording the most number of accidents. Similarly, evenings and late night hours were peppered with accidents.
The police and SLS Transport Training Institute and Consultancy analysed data collected from 42 Traffic Police Stations spread across the city for the year 2014.
Among the fatalities, the police notes there is an increasing trend of children below the age of 12 being among the deceased or the injured. Some trends continue in the city, including two-wheeler riders forming the chunk of casualties. In a city where traversing roads or walking along footpaths is an ordeal, pedestrians account for nearly one in five deaths.
