The Karnataka High Court on Monday ordered issue of notice to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on a PIL petition seeking direction to the civic authority not to grant permission for holding any non-sporting events at the National College grounds in Basavanagudi.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice P.S. Dinesh Kumar passed the order on the petition filed by the Shankarapuram Residents’ Welfare Association. The petitioners complained that those living around the ground are put to severe hardship such as traffic restrictions, sound and air pollution, and garbage menace when the ground is used for non-sporting events, mainly political and religious.

The youth of the area, who use the ground for playing sports, are not allowed to use it for weeks together when the ground is used for religious functions, the petition said.

The bench asked the BBMP counsel to get instructions from the authorities and also made an oral direction to inform the BBMP not to precipitate the issue during the pendency of the petition.
