Calling the controversy around a statement he made during the Nirbhaya Awards 2018 on March 8 about Asha Devi (Nirbhaya’s mother), former Karnataka Director General of Police H.T. Sangliana has clarified that it was ‘just a compliment’.

During his speech, Mr. Sangliana had commented about Ms. Devi’s physique and said, “When I look at her (Nirbhaya’s mother), her physique is very, very nice. Then how beautiful Nirbhaya could have been.”

Responding to the outrage caused by the comment, Mr. Sangliana told The Hindu : “I don’t understand what there is to object to in this. I was just making a compliment and also trying to draw the attention of people about the vulnerability of women, particularly beautiful women.”

Even his ‘tips’ about surrendering to attackers and later following up a case had not gone well with the audience. However, the former DGP said, “What I meant was that life is more important. This is an advice I have always given.”
