A nine-month-old baby girl was found abandoned on the Tirupati Passenger Train heading towards Mysuru, via Bengaluru from Tirupati, on Thursday.

According to the police, passengers heard the baby’s cries when the train stopped at Cantonment station around 8 a.m. An empty milk bottle and a bag of clothes were found next to the baby.

Passengers informed the Train Ticket Examiner and the child helpline, following which the railway and police officials tried to locate the parents for nearly six hours, but in vain. Messages were sent to all police stations on the Tirupati–Bengaluru stretch.

George P.S., Director, Bosco Childline, said when the train reached the city station, the baby was handed over to the Bosco team. She was kept at a temporary shelter run by BOSCO and later produced before the Child Welfare Committee.

The committee has decided to admit the child to Shishu Mandir. “She will be kept there for 90 days. If nobody claims the child, she will be put up for adoption,” said Father George. Mohammad Waseem, a Bosco staff who rescued the baby, said she was found in the passageway. “All signs show that the child was abandoned by the parents.”

In 2014, BOSCO rescued 3,887 children from the city railway station.
