The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have arrested Dilip Kumar (24) and five others for allegedly assaulting Srinivas Shetty, a businessman and his family members in Chamarajpet and making away with 1.9 kg of gold jewellery, including some antique pieces, on June 17. The robbery took place in Mr. Shetty's house at about 11 a.m. His wife was at home, along with two of their domestic help.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) S.N. Sidramappa, Dilip Kumar, who has a shop opposite Mr. Shetty's house, knew about the presence of jewellery in the Shetty residence as he had been invited to religious functions there. “He had an idea about the gold, including old pieces the family inherited from ancestors,” Mr. Sidramappa said. The others arrested are Ravi (24), Lakshman (26), Ramesh (27), Srinivas (24) and Manjunath (22), all belonging to Nelamangala and Mandya. A CCB Inspector H. Siddappa injured his foot when the car in which he was returning with 300 grams of the gold that was stolen, met with an accident near Mandya.
Ex-employee held
The Kadugondanahalli police have arrested three men, including a former employee, in connection with the theft of two kg of gold from a Malleswaram jewellery outlet on June 21.
The arrested are L. Hemant Kumar (30), who worked in Swagat Jewellers, P. Raghavendra Joshi (24) and Kumaraswamy (27).
The police said Kumar knew the jewellery outlet's operations and on his directions, Joshi and Kumaraswamy ambushed the proprietor, Paras Jain, and fled with gold worth Rs. 38 lakh.
Following the arrest, Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari asked the owners of jewellery shops and private security agencies to do a background check of new recruits. He also asked the proprietors to report to the police any suspicious activities of their employees.
Heist cracked
The CCB police have arrested five persons, including a former security guard of Axis Bank, for alleged involvement in the theft of Rs. 29.37 lakh in Chandra Layout on June 7. The men reportedly waylaid Naveen Kumar of Mandya District Cooperative Milk Union when he was going by car to the bank to deposit Rs. 29.37 lakh.
The arrested are Lingaraju (35), the former security guard of Axis Bank, his brothers T.P. Bopanna (28) and T.P. Devaiah (32), apart from Naveen (24) and the car driver M.K. Doddaiah (24). The police have recovered Rs. 19.67 lakh.
Women conned
Two women lost their gold chains to two conmen posing as policemen near the Ragigudda Sri Prasanna Anjaneya Temple in Jayanagar 9th Block on Saturday. The police said Udaya Subramaniam was stopped by the two who told her there had been a murder in the area and advised her to remove her chain. Pretending to help her wrap it, they made good their escape before the victim realised the package they gave her was empty. Half an hour later, Shanta, a Fraser Town resident who had gone to her friend's place in Jayanagar 9th Block, was duped in a similar fashion.
