Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily has disapproved of the statement of K. Sudhakaran, a Congress MP from Kerala, that he had witnessed a Supreme Court judge being bribed 15 years ago.

“I do not approve of such statements,” he said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Bangalore University's 46th convocation on Tuesday.

Mr. Sudhakaran made the claim at a meeting organised by supporters of Kerala Congress leader R. Balakrishna Pillai, who was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case.

Mr. Moily said such random remarks could make people lose faith in such institutions.

“You cannot pass remarks that will bring the institution into disrepute. The judiciary is important...and has been built over 62 years with great efforts and contributions,” he said. Whoever made such statements must be careful while attacking those who occupied the highest offices. “Individuals are not important, institutions are.”

Eager for discussions

Asked about the Opposition's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the 2G spectrum scam, Mr. Moily said: “We are discussing it and exploring all options. We are anxious to hold discussions with the Opposition and see that the next session of Parliament is not stalled.”
