A government pre-university college (PUC) on Magadi Road which was to be demolished to make way for the Metro corridor has been saved by a modification in civil works for the project.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Junior College, near Leprosy Hospital, is located at a distance of 8 metres from Metro corridor boundary. The alignment of the viaduct (the bridge over which rails will be laid) located near the college, was modified so that the college building remained unaffected.
An official at the construction site of the Magadi Metro Station said that an estimation of the value of the college and the land had been done and a notification issued to it.
According to the official, in the process, the decision of allowing the building to remain saved Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. the expense of acquiring a part of the building. Since the Metro required 10 metres from the centre of the viaduct, acquiring the building even partially would have cost Rs. 50 lakh. The cost of demolishing the required portion would have come to another Rs. 50 lakh.
The detailed project report on the Magadi Station, in 2006-2007, had mentioned the position of the college with regard to the Metro. Construction work began at the Magadi Station in 2008. Magadi Road is the first station where the Metro train emerges from the tunnel when starting from Byappanahalli on the East-West line.
