Mobile app comes in handy for police

March 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Bengaluru:

A mobile app helped police catch red-handedly a 33-year-old software engineer when she was stealing ornaments from a jewellery store in Jayanagar and arrest her on Friday.

Siddapura police said Navitha Harish, a resident of Anekal, would visit jewellery shops and pretend as if she was going to buy jewellery. While salespersons used to show her the jewellery, she would replace the gold ornaments with fake jewellery.

This way she stole four bangles, police said.

Complaints were registered a fortnight ago at Siddapura and Jayanagar police stations.

The Siddapura police obtained her picture from the CCTV camera footage and circulated it among jewellery shop owners through WhatsApp. When Navitha visited a shop in Jayanagar, the alert staff there recognised her and called the police.
