A mob allegedly attacked two women animal rights activists along with two constables accompanying them when they tried to rescue cattle from an illegal slaughterhouse at Avalahalli near Thalaghattapura on Saturday evening.
The accompanying constables tried to quell the mob, but they started pelting them with stones. In the melee, Nandini, 45, a software engineer from Koramangala, fractured her hand and sustained head injuries. Her friend Sejil, also a software engineer, sustained injuries on her arms and face. Their car was also damaged in the attack.
The Thalaghattapura police said they have registered a case based on Ms. Nandini’s complaint. In her complaint, Ms. Nandini said she and Ms. Sejil were in their car near Avalahalli on Saturday and saw 14 cows being transported illegally to a slaughterhouse. She rushed to the police station and filed a complaint and along with two policemen drove to the slaughterhouse.
As they reached the spot, a crowd began to gather around them. “When we reached the spot accompanied by two police constables a mob of 100 men attacked our car with boulders and bricks,” Ms. Nandini said in her complaint.
No arrests have been made so far, but efforts are on to nab the attackers, said the police. The 14 cows were rescued.
The police have taken up a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and also under the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964.
