The space can be walled up and the walls used for advertisements: Venkatesh Murthy
Don’t be surprised if you see garbage being dumped below the flyovers in future. Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy has suggested that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) set up garbage segregation units in the space available under the flyovers in the city. On Monday, he chaired a meeting on solid waste management (SWM) with Commissioner Rajneesh Goel. He said that BBMP could wall the space available under the flyover. The walls can also have advertisements and flexes. “This will hide the garbage from public view. This has been done below the Domlur flyover,” he said and asked officials to check the feasibility of his suggestion.
The State government is looking for landfill sites on the outskirts, and sites for decentralised processing units in each Assembly constituency, and for segregation centres in each ward. The land, government or privately owned, should facilitate the purpose of waste disposal. There was land available on Mysore Road, Koratagere, Tumkur Road, Kanakapura and Hosur Road, he said and instructed the zonal commissioners to identify suitable sites in these areas.
Work of setting up units in each constituency will be handed over to Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Ltd. (KRIDL). Engineers have been directed to submit cost estimate to the Commissioner so that work can be completed within two months.
Mr. Goel said that the BBMP had submitted to the government a proposal to impose fine on those who do not segregate waste, by amending Section 431 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act.

This is what a citizen can expect when such clueless silliness pass for governance! Amazed to see the kind of thoughtless prescription from the Mayor. Don't you sir have any aesthetic judgement keeping in mind the natural beauty of Bengaluru. Or should we sacrifice that too to appease the god of garbage? And what about foul smell, contaminants and traffic hazards? Do you propose these kind of "solutions" to appear intelligent and concerned? Believe me the effect is actually the opposite.
Great cities of the world have mastered the science of sorting their garbage resulting in 4-5% being sent to landfills. And it is not rocket science! We just need vested interest to be shoved aside. Evidently people like the Mayor and ministers in charge of Bengaluru do not care and have no clue on how to become such a great city. Would advise them to get the right brains to find the solution. Instead of giving themselves the resposibility and coming up with such dangerous suggestions.
