The relationship of a city with cinema is a complex one, both as a space of production and consumption of the art form. Mumbai-based documentary filmmaker Madhushree Dutta’s “Project Cinema City: Research Art and Documentary Practices” looks at this relationship through multiple prisms.
The multimedia project opens at the National Gallery of Modern Arts (NGMA) here on Saturday and will continue till December 2. The programmes under the project include discussions, exhibition of installations, photographs, paintings and sculptures, besides guided gallery walks and film shows.
It is a joint presentation by NGMA and Mumbai-based cultural organisation Majlis, of which Ms. Datta is director. The project is co-curated by Archana Hande.
One of the highlights of the programme is a daylong conversation between the cultural practitioners of Mumbai and Bangalore on Sunday on the theme, Ways of Mapping the City, in two sessions.
A show comprising works of 12 eminent artists as well as works produced through interfaces between practitioners of various disciplines will be on at NGMA till December 2 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. except on Mondays and national holidays. Films produced under the project will be screened at NGMA auditorium on select days. Besides, there will be guided gallery walks conducted by the artists and curators on every weekend.
The event will be inaugurated on Saturday by filmmaker M.S. Sathyu and painter and sculptor Balan Nambiar at 6 p.m.
There will also be some programmes at Number 1, Shanthi Road, and Jaaga. For details of the project, log on to projectcinemacity.com
