A 35-year-old man, who arrived at Kempegowda International Airport here from Bangkok, was found to be transporting four gold bars, together weighing around 490 g, by concealing them in his rectum.
Vikas Kumar alias Vicky, a resident of Ulhasnagar in Thane district of Maharashtra, was caught soon after he landed here on June 10, sources said on Friday.
Customs officials here had been tipped off by their counterparts.
Though Vikas confessed that he was a garments businessman and smuggled gold into the country to avoid taxes, the police suspect that he was a courier for an international gold smuggling racket. Initially, Vikas was scheduled to reach Mumbai, but chose to land in Bengaluru in view of high security in Mumbai. He was scheduled to reach Mumbai from here by a domestic airline, the police said.
Sources said that concealing gold in rectum was not new, but it was becoming a trend as detection was difficult. In March, Customs officials at Mangaluru airport held Deepak Nachaldas Wadhwa, (43), a resident of Ulhasnagar, Thane, who had concealed 10 gold bars, together weighing 472.52 g, in his rectum.
