An 80-year-old man allegedly attempted to commit suicide after stabbing his wife in public on Sunday noon.

Police said that family dispute is said to be the reason behind the incident.

The incident was reported in Kuvempu Nagar in Gangammanagudi police station limits on Sunday noon at about 3.30 p.m.

Police officials have identified the deceased as Kalavathi (60), who was working as a domestic help. She was the second wife of Subramani and was living in Kuvempu Nagar. The accused, Subramani, was living with his first wife, Vishalakshi, and their children in Srinagar at Banashankari.

The police said that the incident took place while Kalavathi was retuning home after finishing work. At around 3.30 p.m., after the victim disembarked the bus and was walking towards home, Subramani followed her and stabbed her repeatedly with a knife in public view. As people rushed to rescue Kalavathi, the accused allegedly stabbed himself and collapsed on the road.

The locals alerted police officials who rushed to the spot and carried the injured Subramani to a private hospital, where he is said to be recovering.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Subramani, a habitual alcoholic, would come to Kalavathi’s house often and quarrel with her over trivial issue.

“The accused was also harassing her for money to buy liquor. The neighbours told the police that they had warned Subramani not to come to her house. Upset over this, he may have killed his wife and attempted suicide”, said a police officer.

Gangammanagudi police have registered a case and are investigating further.
