A 32-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl at Yelahanka.

Vimal Sharma, a carpenter who migrated to the city from Bihar, is accused of sexually assaulting the girl over the past year. Yelahanka Police said the two families live next to each other, and Sharma was close to the girl’s family. “The father of the girl had passed away and the mother was a housekeeper. Sharma grew close by providing them with financial support. As he continued having sex with the girl, we think that she was scared to open up about it to her mother as Sharma was a constant presence and support to the family,” said a senior police officer.

Rumours of the illicit, illegal relationship reached teachers and a local NGO who had visited the area. They filed a complaint with the police, based on which they arrested Sharma under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.
