Lorry unions call off proposed strike

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - Bengaluru:

Under pressure from truck owners and traders, the city traffic police have relaxed restrictions on entry of goods-laden trucks into the city during daytime. Trucks can now enter during non-peak hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. in addition to the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m slot.

This prompted lorry and truck unions to call off a proposed indefinite strike, which was to begin on Friday midnight. Earlier, traffic police had restricted the entry of trucks to between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. only in a bid to decongest the city.

Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi said many truck unions had approached him with representations highlighting labour shortage at night, and that all the markets are situated within the city. He said a committee, headed by Additional Commissioner (Traffic) B. Dayananda, has been formed to suggest a long-term plan to sort out the issue. It has representation from multiple stakeholders

G.R. Shanmugappa, president of the Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners and Agents’ Association, said the only long-term solution could be shifting all wholesale markets to the outskirts of the city.
