Listen to music while waiting for the metro

You will not just hear Plain Jane announcements in Namma Metro stations. From next week, Karnataka’s folk, Bhavageethe, Carnatic and Hindustani, all in instrumental melody, will be played at 30 metro stations.

Staff at M.G. Road and Trinity stations are testing sound equalisers that will help regulate and fine-tune the volume of music and announcements. However, music will not be played inside trains, as there is an announcement every 90 seconds.

“We are going to play music at no extra cost, as we will use the existing communication system. Music will be loaded at the Operational Control Centre at Byappanahalli. From the telecom system in the public address mode, it gets on speakers placed in every station,” explained U.A. Vasanth Rao, Chief Public Relations Officer, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL).

‘Other genres too’

“Bengaluru being a cosmopolitan city, we will gradually think of including diverse melodies from other States. Depending on the response, we will steadily consider offering Western Instrumental too,” he added. “Artistes can send in their instrumental melodies as long as they don’t consider Namma Metro stations as launch pads or use it for commercial gain. We have a set of people to curate the selection.”
