A lineman of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) ended up losing his life on Friday while attending to a complaint on Granite India Road in Hoody.

Muniraju (43) was killed on the spot after he was allegedly electrocuted and fell from a 15-feet-high electric pole in Mahadevapura.

This is the sixth ‘departmental death’ (fatal electrocution of Bescom employee) reported this year since April. There were seven such deaths in the last financial year.

Muniraju, along with his assistant Gopalaiah and a junior engineer, went near a transformer following a complaint from the staff of a private firm. He climbed a pole for inspection and slipped after sustaining an electric shock, police said. He sustained multiple injuries. The bleeding lineman was rushed to Vydehi Hospital in Whitefield where doctors declared him as brought dead.

The Mahadevapura police have registered a case of death due to negligence and are investigating. According to a senior police officer, as per the procedure, the electric supply should have been disconnected before Muniraju began inspecting the transformer.

Bescom says

G. Sheela, General Manager, Safety and Standards, Bescom, said, “Muniraju had worn safety gear and taken the required precautions. Earthing had been done on both sides too. We went to the spot and could not ascertain how the accident happened. We are awaiting the post-mortem report for more clarity.”
