The condition of 28-year-old Lakshmi Devi, who attempted suicide alleging police torture on Sunday, continues to be critical.

Raghu, her cousin, told The Hindu on Tuesday that she had requested him to take her home after the police allegedly told her that she would be sent to jail if she did not admit to the theft charges levelled against her. “She told me that she was scared to go to jail and decided to end her life,” Mr. Raghu said.

Meanwhile, the police are waiting for a copy of the second statement given to the executive magistrate on Monday by her. A case has been booked against two policemen for illegal detention and assault.

Meanwhile activists of Alternative Law Forum are planning to provide assistance to Lakshmi Devi and her family members to seek action against the accused.
