The Karnataka Minister V Somanna on Monday resigned from the Yeddyurappa ministry after having failed to get himself elected to the state assembly in a bypoll.
Mr. Somanna, who lost the August 18 assembly by-election in Govindarajanagar constituency, handed over his resignation letter to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
The seat was earlier held by him as a Congress candidate but he had to vacate it after defecting to BJP.
"I will take a decision on accepting his resignation after consulting the state BJP chief D V Sadananda Gowda, national general secretary Ananth Kumar and the party high command," Mr. Yeddyurappa told reporters after receiving the resignation letter.
The RSS at its two-day southern region meet, which concluded at Davanagere on Sunday, reportedly asked Mr. Yeddyurappa to seek the resignation of Mr. Somanna.
The chief minister said he would decide later as to what position could be given to Mr. Somanna.
