Janata Dal (Secular) is set to put the Congress government in a tight spot during the winter session at Belagavi, scheduled to commence on December 9, by raising the issues of sugarcane growers and illegal sand extraction.
The party has decided to take on the Congress even before. Party leaders and workers will stage dharnas outside the offices of deputy commissioners in all districts demanding justice for the farming community, especially sugarcane growers, on December 5.
These decisions are part of the strategies planned by the party’s new State leadership, which met here on Monday. “Well-thought-out strategies have been planned to make the party’s presence felt, both inside and outside the House, by raising issues pertaining to people, especially farmers,” State president H.D. Kumaraswamy said.
Appeal to BJPHe clarified that the JD(S) would not join hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party, which was planning to boycott “corrupt” Ministers in the government. He appealed to the BJP to make use of the winter session to find solutions to issues, instead of boycotting proceedings and staging dharnas. “The BJP, which had more “corrupt” Ministers during its five-year regime, has no moral right to demand resignations,” he observed.
Holding the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre equally responsible for the problems of sugarcane growers in the State, Mr. Kumaraswamy challenged the State unit to lay siege to Parliament instead of the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi.
