Jain Bhavan flip-flops on trade licence

February 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:31 am IST - Bengaluru:

Pannalal Choradiya Jain Bhavan, a community hall in Hanumanth Nagar, has been in the eye of the storm as the property is at present sealed by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as commercial activities were being carried out there without a trade licence.

The Sri Vardhaman Sthanakvasi Jain Shravak Sangh that is managing the property has been taking contrary decisions with regard to applying for a trade licence for the community hall. While they initially gave an undertaking that they would seek a trade licence to prevent the closure of their hall, the sangh later argued that they were a religious trust and they need not take a trade licence.

Now, the shravak sangh has once again changed its decision and is now planning to apply for the trade licence. When contacted, sangh president Thevarchand Singhvi confirmed this to The Hindu .

The local Mount Joy Extension Residents’ Welfare Association had complained to BBMP that the hall that was sanctioned as a community hall was renting out the premises for parties and other functions. BBMP had issued a closure order on December 27, 2014.

The Sri Vardhaman Sthanakvasi Jain Shravak Sangh had then on January 8, given an undertaking that they would not rent it out without a trade licence. However, the hall was again closed down on January 23 after it was found to have been let out. Though the hall was opened again for a health camp, it was again closed by BBMP on February 6.
