Industry bodies welcome suggestion to split BBMP

December 24, 2014 01:27 am | Updated May 23, 2016 03:55 pm IST - Bengaluru:

Industry bodies have welcomed the recommendation by a three-member committee to divide BBMP.

S. Sampathraman, president of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said the recommendation by the committee is a welcome move. “The division of BBMP into zones will help in developing basic infrastructure in a proper manner. When BBMP is divided into zones, it will become more manageable. This will also help in proper tax collection and will increase the revenue of BBMP which in turn will facilitate development of the city,” he said.

T.V. Mohandas Pai, chairperson of the Manipal Global Education and the former Member of Board, Infosys, said: “Bengaluru is a major city that contributes to 60 per cent of the State’s GDP. The functioning of BBMP in the current form will not help citizens. I believe that BBMP can be divided into more than four zones. Each zone can compete with one another for growth.” He added that each zone should be planned keeping the needs of people during the next 20 years in mind.
