Indiranagar 100-ft Road to be renamed as Dr. S.K. Karim Khan Road

The official function will take place on Sunday

Indiranagar 100-feet Road will be named after renowned folklorist Dr. S.K. Karim Khan on Sunday, said Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana.

The decision to rename the road was taken in 2006 when the then Mayor Mumtaz Begum passed a resolution in council. However, it was not implemented and was being postponed for various reasons.

Repeated demand

Over the past eight years, repeated requests have been made to the BBMP to implement the 2006 resolution. The previous two council meetings too witnessed requests by D.J. Halli councillor Sampath Raj, urging the Mayor to direct officials to rename the road at the earliest.

The issue came to a head only when pro-Kannada organisations, led by Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj, staged a protest in the BBMP head office on Monday. They threatened to rename the road themselves. The Mayor then met the protesters and assured them of renaming the road soon.

On Wednesday, Mr. Sathyanarayana met pro-Kannada organisations, along with C.V. Raman Nagar MLA S. Raghu, and scheduled the road renaming programme for August 31 at 11.30 a.m.

The former Mayors, Ms. Begum, K.H.N. Simha and S.K. Nataraj, the former Minister B.T. Lalitha Naik, BBMP council’s Opposition Leader B.N. Manjunath Reddy and BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayana were present.

Meanwhile, Mr. Vatal Nagaraj urged the government to institute an award in Dr. Khan’s name.
