A probationary officer with the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) has been arrested for allegedly making an obscene video of his wife and using it to blackmail her for more dowry.
The victim, who is his batch mate and working in Bangalore, has returned to her native place, Nagpur, where she filed a complaint with the police.
Based on the complaint, a team from the Gittikhadan police station in Nagpur, landed in Bangalore and picked up the accused, Nishwant Davrajan Kullulathil, on Thursday with the help of the local police, from his sister’s house at Amruthahalli where he was hiding.
Mr. Kullalathil was taken to Nagpur for further investigation.
A native of Kerala, Mr. Kullalathil fell in love with his batch mate and the two got married in February against the wishes of their parents and started living in a house at Koramangala here.
Soon after the marriage, the accused allegedly started harassing her for dowry. He also used to exploit her sexually and video the acts and blackmail her to get more dowry, the police said.
Unable to bear the harassment, the victim took leave and went back to Nagpur and stayed in a hostel.
Mr. Kullalathil who went to meet her earlier this month on the pretext of having a talk with her, allegedly sexually assaulted her in the hostel room and recorded it.
He allegedly threatened to post the obscene videos on the Internet if she did not give him Rs. 10 lakh, the police said.
The victim has also alleged that her in-laws had harassed her mentally by demanding dowry. Based on her complaint, the police have booked Mr. Kullalathil under unnatural sexual offence and criminal intimidation, blackmail and dowry harassment.
