The two-day National Conference on IT for Persons with Disabilities, which concluded here on Tuesday, has come up with a set of recommendations that include reserving 5 per cent of jobs for those with disabilities.
Nineteen recommendations were formulated during the course of the conference. “Presently, there is a Government Order on reserving 3 per cent of the jobs in the government sector for the disabled. The recommendation was to increase the quota to 5 per cent not just in government, but also in the private sector, through active means and not through legislation,” Ashok Kumar Manoli, Principal Secretary to the Department of IT, BT and Science and Technology, told The Hindu .
Other recommendations include the State Government and the private sector working together to bridge the technical and skill gaps among persons with disability to improve their employability.
The conference also recommended that all Government Department websites be made disabled-friendly.
Chief Executive Officer of NASSCOM Foundation Rita Soni said their organisation recently held a job fair for persons with disability in New Delhi. “We had organised a fair for about 150 people, but more than 400 turned up. About 70 persons got jobs,” she said.
She said the organisation also held a career counselling session in Chennai.
