The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has directed all ICSE and ISC schools to ensure that students have regular yoga training.
Schools have been asked to conduct yoga classes twice a week and also hold lectures and demonstrations by eminent yoga professionals.
A press release issued by CISCE on Thursday stated that the rationale behind the order was to ensure that yoga is not relegated to a one-off activity and that the younger generation gets “familiarised” with a healthy way of life.
Making students aware
Schools have been asked to ensure that students are made aware of the benefits of yoga. The decision of the CISCE to issue an advisory to schools was taken after the Ministry of AYUSH convened a meeting earlier this month to discuss preparations for the second International Day of Yoga to be held on June 21.
Mixed response
The move has received mixed response from school managements as well as students.
Fr. Shaju Varghese, principal of Christ School, said the school is already conducting yoga classes, but they were not mandatory.
“Personally, I feel yoga should not be made compulsory for all students and it can be imparted to students who are interested in it,” he said.
Dharini, a class 12 student of Bishop Cotton Girl’s School, said it was a good move as it would help students be physically fit and teach them how to cope with academic stress.
