Hemavathi, the woman rescued on Tuesday from an alleged four-year confinement by her family, is severely malnourished and anaemic, said doctors attending on her at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans).
“Apart from this, she is suffering from stiffness in the joints because of which she is not able to move her limbs freely. We are getting an orthopaedic evaluation done after which she will be treated for that,” medical superintendent V.L. Sateesh said.
She had been cleaned up and her overlong nails and hair trimmed with permission from her and her family. She is on a normal diet but is being given nutrient supplements and multivitamins. Her parents are with her.
Dr. Sateesh she has depression. “We have no information about her previous medical history. We have asked her parents to get her records. We are not delving aggressively into this issue because right now our priority is her malnourishment.” Ms. Hemavathi will undergo an X-ray and ultrasound abdomen scan.
Though there were reports she had been earlier treated at the K.C. General Hospital in Malleshwaram and St. Theresa’s Hospital on Dr Rajkumar Road in Rajajinagar, doctors were unable to establish this.
Sr. Chandra, administrator of St Theresa’s Hospital, told The Hindu their records could not come up with anything definite. “We can help only if her parents produce some old hospital records.”
Doctors at K.C. General Hospital were also of the same opinion.
