With Christmas and New Year round the corner, it is time for back-to-back partying. Doctors, however, warn that you might just end up complaining about “holiday fat” as the New Year dawns. So, do have fun, but do not entirely lose control, say city-based nutritionists.
People who get busy with festivities right from Dasara-Deepavali season up to the end of the year wake up to make health resolutions only when the New Year comes knocking. “It is important to follow a healthy lifestyle all through the year,” says diet, nutrition and wellness consultant Sheela Krishnaswamy.
“If you plan to eat out, start with clear soup or salad or with some roasted nuts,” says Ms. Krishnamurthy. She says it is better to choose boiled, steamed, grilled dishes over fried items, even at a party.
According to Consultant Therapeutic Nutritionist Manjari Chandra, the trick is to enjoy what you are eating while avoiding overindulging. “People should watch out because the dip in mercury levels is going to enhance appetite and a craving for unhealthy foods,” she says. “While it is not wrong to appease your taste buds once in a while, giving into the temptation every time you devour your favourite junk snack can make you go off the scale.”
Prudent eating and regular workout is the mantra for striking a balance between calories consumed and calories burned. Eating healthy and minding your portions – even during the holiday season – will ensure you do not repent by the end of the season, nutritionists say.
