Head constable knocked down by car, dies

A 59-year-old head constable died, while on duty, after a speeding car knocked him down, on the outskirts of Tavarekere on Friday night. The deceased, Daaligappa, attached to the Nandagudi police station, was due to retire in two months, and resided at the Nandagudi police quarters.

Daaligappa and his colleague, Venkateshiah, a police constable, were managing the crowd that had gathered on the Tavarekere flyover, to see the Karaga with the Tavarekere village fest, and an orchestra that was playing below.

Around 12.30 a.m., Daaligappa was on the stationary bike, while Venkateshiah had gone ahead to disperse the crowd that was obstructing traffic movement on the highway. While he was waiting, a speeding car rammed into Daaligappa’s bike, causing him to fall and sustain grievous injuries. Venkateshiah rushed to the spot, called an ambulance, and alerted his senior officials. The head constable was taken to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The police have seized the car that caused the accident, but could not arrest the driver as he fled the.

The Nandagudi police have registered a case of accidental death due to rash and negligent driving. Daaligappa is survived by his wife and 13-year-old daughter.
