Dejected over frequent harassment from moneylenders, a 45-year-old cloth merchant and his wife committed suicide by hanging themselves at their residence at Mavalli on Monday night.

The deceased have been identified as Nanjudaswamy and Pushpalatha. The couple had left behind a suicide note accusing their son, local councillor and others for harassing them and stated that this was the reason behind their extreme step.

According to the police, the couple’s son Chandan had borrowed over ₹46 lakh loan from Arya Srinivas, councillor of Hemmigepura ward, and others and spent it on gambling. The moneylenders started harassing the couple to repay the loan. Unable to bear the harassment, the couple decided to end their life.

The incident came to light on Tuesday morning and neighbours alerted the police who rushed to the spot and shifted the body for post-mortem.

Based on the suicide note, the police have booked Chandan, Arya Srinivas and others under abetment to suicide.
