The condition of Mariam Kouser, the three-year-old girl who suffered brain damage owing to alleged medical negligence at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic, Jayanagar, continued to be critical on Wednesday.
Health Minister U.T. Khader, who on Tuesday visited the girl at Dr. Malathi Manipal Hospital, where she has been shifted to, said he had ordered an inquiry into the case. “The probe will be conducted by the State Health Director Geeta Nyamgoudar along with an anaesthetist and intensivist. If required, these doctors will take technical assistance from Manipal Hospital,” Mr. Khader said.
‘Struggling to breathe’Mariam Kauser was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi hospital on December 13 for treatment of a fracture in her left hand. Her aunt, Reshma Rafiq, said the girl was struggling to breathe on Wednesday. Doctors have put her on a ventilator, she said.
“Her health condition started deteriorating on December 16 after a surgery. Initially, doctors has told us that it would be a simple 30-minute procedure, but she was in the operation theatre for more than seven hours. While she was in the hospital for two days after the surgery, her condition deteriorated further,” she recalled.
Medical director of Manipal Hospital Sudarshan Ballal said the girl continued to be critical. “She has gone into coma and we cannot say anything now. She has been put on a ventilator and doctors are doing their best,” he said.
