A six-year-old child, daughter of migrant construction labourers from Siruguppa taluk of Bellary, was raped and murdered in Ramdev Garden area here on Friday.
The K.G. Halli police said the family lived in a slum inhabited by at least 100 families of migrant labourers. Every day the parents of the child were forced to leave her alone in their hut as they went out in search of work.
On Friday evening, they found their child missing when they returned from work.
A frantic search led to the discovery of her badly bruised body on some vacant land behind a temple in the area.
For most part of Saturday, police maintained that tracking down the offender was turning into a Herculean task.
“There are hundreds of huts here. It could have been anybody,” said a police officer. However, by evening some police officers said that they were following some leads.
